Hyacinth Bucket makes her debut in this series premiere as a pretentious, middle-class housewife determined to hide her less-than-fastidious relations from the public. Through a series of events, Hyacinth learns the “naked” truth about her father and his sexual escapades, yet is determined to cover it up. When her timid neighbour Elizabeth is invited over for tea, Hyacinth subjects her mercilessly to the suffocating effects of her hospitality, culminating in Elizabeth dropping the china in her mounting nervousness. Throughout the episode, Hyacinth’s husband Richard obeys his wife’s demands painfully but meekly. Hyacinth does not hesitate to express her opinions and disdain for all that is less than orderly and sophisticated, like her.
