Almost Canadian

After two years of dicking around, I finally filed the necessary papers with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.  The form was surprisingly short and the application cost $200… along with the $15 to get two Immigration photos done  ( which have different specifications from passport photos).

The process is going to take a while… and there’s a document called ‘Discover Canada: the Rights and Responsibilities’ which I’m supposed to study about Canadian history, values, rights and responsibilities of citizenship etc.  Then I’ll take a citizenship test and take an oath before a citizenship judge.  If I flunk the test I’ll have an interview with a citizenship judge.  Guess I got a lot of studying to do.

So by this time next year… I really will be Canadian.  Holy cow eh?

More Military Stuff

It’s been a long time coming, and I’m not sure if other naval forces across the world will follow suit… but it seems that women will soon be allowed to serve on submarines alongside the blokes.  Apparently they’ll need to modify them to accommodate separate quarters.  I don’t agree with that one bit.  I can completely understand having seperate shower facilities or times for the women to shower… but to have seperate sleeping quarters simply isn’t right.  If women want equality they need to strive for it and not expect special treatment.  There’s no more chance of a woman submariner banging a shipmate then two dudes on a submarine banging. Reducing the risk of sexual assault should be down to stronger discipline and control of subordinates.

On another note… there’s a Lieutenant-Colonel Jennie Carignan in the Canadian Forces, who is in charge of a regiment of engineers in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  It’s pretty awesome to see a female that high up in the chain of command – it proves things are changing and for the better.  You can read about Lt Colonel Carignan on BBC News >>

How America’s Health Care System Used To Work

With the passing of the recent health-care legislation there’s been a lot of stupid people whining about having to pay for other people’s health-care.  I hope this bill gives them all stomach ulcers.

This scene from the movie ‘John Q’ shows just how crooked the American insurance industry and health care system USED to work, and why America’s Republicans who voted against this bill Barack Obama signed into law should have their voting rights taken away as a penalty for liking an old system that allowed sick people to go uncared for.

In Honour of a Lezzer

I recently had the utmost privilege of becoming very close friends with the world’s most awesome lesbian.  She kicks ass, and I”m hoping one day will have the sense to join the Canadian Forces and become one of a very select crowd of female aboriginal artillery officers.  I’m wondering if there are any at all in North America.

Leona stayed at my house for about a week and we watched chick flicks, went to the bar and played pool at around 7pm when NOBODY was there.  It was the most relaxing and fun time I’ve had in close to three years.

Anyway… everytime I hear the song ‘Saviour’ by Lights… I think of Leona and remember how awesome her lezzerness is.  So here it it…

I miss America

Over the past ten years I’ve spent considerable time living in the U.S. There were a few hiccups but most of the time it was awesome. There’s simply no feeling equal to being a British bloke walking into a smalltown bar like in Delta, Utah where I lived… and hearing Alan Jackson singing ‘Pop a Top’, or Tracey Lawrence crooning ‘Time Marches On’… while blokes walk around with real Stetson hats and ropers. The kind of stuff I only saw in movies back in England.

Even now when I think about that day… getting completely drunk on Peach Schnapps and then going outside and barfing it up on the sidewalk it still gives me butterflies. It was awesome. I was happy. I had not a care in the world. I was finally in America.

I remember wearing all denim, with a stetson walking down Main Street.. I didn’t look too bad.

Now I live in Canada… even though I’ve had ten years of the ‘New world’ buzz… it still is awesome everytime I go across the border.

So I figured I’d put this awesome Youtube video on. Sit back, close your eyes and imagine a small town bar with an uneven warped wooden floor.. not much lighting, only one pool table… coupla rednecks sitting at the bar and one or two people with Yank accents floating around… and hopefully you’ll get the feeling I do.

Finally proud to be Canadian

I’ve  been in Canada since the evening of 22nd December 2002.  It’s taken up until about 15 minutes ago for me to finally admit that I’m Canadian… and proud to be so.  The transformation was gradual and slight.. helped in no small part by joining the Canadian Forces, and finally by the immense amount of pride I felt when CANADA WON THE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL AT MEN’S HOCKEY just a short while ago!  From outside my house anyone listening would’ve thought me a weirdo from all the screaming and shouting… but I didn’t care.  We won the gold medal!

Oscar Wilde once said that patriotism is a virtue of the vicious… but right now I couldn’t give a toss! I am very proudly a Canadian patriot.

I’m still a Permanent Resident of Canada (with the right to apply for Canadian citizenship).  I will forever be a British Canadian.  Blighty is where I’m from… where I was born and raised, but Canada’s my home and life now.

It feels good to finally refer to myself as Canadian.  Je suis construit pour la vie en Canada!

Blahhhhhhhhhh

I kinda lost the motivation to blog for the last little while. I’m blogging now because I’m nowhere near to going to sleep, and I have to get up in two hours anyway.

Just as I was feeling completely sick of working for myself, my previous boss called me and offered me my old job back and I accepted which was convenient and good for both of us. So I’m back at Overdrive slogging my guts out every day, working from home and building awesome websites. Not having to worry about work hours or schedules is brilliantly refreshing.

After 25 years I now officially have a girlfriend. I’m in a relationship for once, and not just shagging some bird and then getting ditched. My lady’s name is Sam and she’s delightfully kindhearted and easy to get along with (most of the time). I’ve got high hopes for us.

I completed a Battle Fitness Test at Kenora Armouries today for the Canadian Forces. Every reserve soldier has to do it once a year – 13km rucksack march followed by a fireman’s carry across 100yards. I completed it fourth to last and was 3 laps around the parade square behind the main group. The damn floor was slippery as hell and everytime I went to step forward my other foot would slip as I was bringing it up which made things worse. Apparently I went beetroot red and then started to go white. I need to work on my cardiovascular fitness.

I also ordered Seasons 1-7 of the tv series from England called ‘Spooks’. All I will say is… I do not regret it at all!

Discussions on the military

Canadian and American troops boarding a helicopter in transit to Afghanistan

Today I had the opportunity to talk to an acquaintance about the benefits and advantages of life in the Army.  A bit of explanation about the fact that nobody is ever made redundant in the military and that it’s a guaranteed income was supposed to convince her to give it a try.

She then went off on the same ol’ looney left liberal spiel about shooting people is always the last answer.  The same infuriating blinded point of view that is seen in so many stupid people.  It makes me want to smack people around when they spout all that bullshit about war isn’t necessary and shooting people is not the answer.

I told the person I was talking to that her point of view would get her about five feet in the deserts of Afghanistan against a murdering suicide bomber.  I explained that my point of view would get me considerably further and give me a much greater chance of living than hers would give her.

Trying to impress upon someone that serving in the military is an act of citizenship, a display of a sense of duty and caring towards innocent fellow human beings, is enough to make almost anyone want to slap somebody.

We both agreed that there will never be peace in the world and there will always be bad people.  She said Read more...
