I’ve been in Canada since the evening of 22nd December 2002. It’s taken up until about 15 minutes ago for me to finally admit that I’m Canadian… and proud to be so. The transformation was gradual and slight.. helped in no small part by joining the Canadian Forces, and finally by the immense amount of pride I felt when CANADA WON THE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL AT MEN’S HOCKEY just a short while ago! From outside my house anyone listening would’ve thought me a weirdo from all the screaming and shouting… but I didn’t care. We won the gold medal!
Oscar Wilde once said that patriotism is a virtue of the vicious… but right now I couldn’t give a toss! I am very proudly a Canadian patriot.
I’m still a Permanent Resident of Canada (with the right to apply for Canadian citizenship). I will forever be a British Canadian. Blighty is where I’m from… where I was born and raised, but Canada’s my home and life now.
It feels good to finally refer to myself as Canadian. Je suis construit pour la vie en Canada!
